THE WORD | THESE BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Antonia&Ronan&Leo, Asad&Dan and Darjeeling Express [Covent Garden, so good!], Paul and the LCC MA in Advertising class, the WARC London team for the webinar with a live studio audience, Mr Bingo, a pub lunch with the family on our last Sunday in the UK, and dinner and games with Frances&Dave.
WHAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT | THE MEDIUM AND THE MASSAGE
Our WARC webinar was about balanced brand communication plans having to take into account the socio-cultural media system and the externalities of media choices, which is to say how certain media channels make people feel bad and perhaps have not had the best impact on democracy and culture and that.
Famously, McLuhan's paradoxically phrased the medium is the message concept evolved via a publishing typo into the medium is the massage.
And, because language is inherently ambiguous, this made us think of futurists, trend watchers, digital prophets for profit, and, ultimately, all strategic thinkers inside corporate systems. For they are the mediums, channelling the occult, reading the tea leaves, research reports, blogs and trending topics. And they massage the clients and the uncertain future, to make it possible for marketing managers at large companies to deploy unimaginable amounts of money into the media [or digital transformation, or enterprise software, or R&D, or indeed any significant investment at all.]
So mediums massage messages into media, as it were.

Inside the Animation of The Spider-Verse
#Creativity #Technology #Mashups
We loved the movie for a lot of reasons including the fantastic storytelling and emotions, but it's incredible and fresh animation style was definitely one of the first things we noticed and adored. Animation is an incredbily flexible medium, but technology tends to automate elements to the point of system similarity. The filmmakers had to move backwards to move forwards, and focus on making every individual image as important as the action. Massage that medium! :NEWYORKTIMES:
Bump The Lamp
#Animation #Details #Perception
Since we are so animated, here a short piece Faris wrote around a 7 minute documentary about the animation innovations of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Disney animators are always reminded to 'Bump the Lamp", which is to say go above and beyond to create something great. ::MEDIUM::
Why The Chandigarh Chair Now Costs $30K
#Modernism #Globalisation #Arbitrage
Right now at this moment we are on our way to India and it reminded us of our trip to Chandigarh, one of the most unusual Indian cities, for a number of reasons. Designed as a modernist Utopia by Le Corbusier himself, it had thousands of chairs made cheaply by local craftsmen. Then the art world got hold of some. ::ESQUIRE:: [BONUS PODCAST: Chandigarh - The Modernist Utopia]

#SpeakingSwagger #WatchThis #Obsessed
As you likely know from being a subscriber to this here newsletter, about half of our income comes from speaking at conferences and events around the world. It's honestly our favorite thing to do, and we're hoping that 2020 has even more speaking in store for us. Previously, we had an introductory video featuring Faris, but as now nearly all our talks are dual presentations, we needed one with Rosie. We collaborated with our friends from The Goondocks.tv to make this introductory video, which we'll start rolling out before our talk. No goldfish, or Ashleys, were harmed in the making of this video ;) (And if you might want to hire us for a talk, do be in touch...) ::THE GOONDOCKS.TV::
