PREFERRED ADULT BEVERAGE
Wine, usually something from the menu that I’ve never heard of. It’s a great way to learn and develop your palate. Most recently, I tried a Georgian Kisi that I really enjoyed – don’t sleep on Eastern Europe.
BEST VACATION DESTINATION
A recent trip to the Masai Mara tops the list. Seeing nature in one of its purest forms is pretty magical.
CURRENTLY READING
I’m working my way through a few at a time: American Prison which is definitely no bedtime story, Calypso for a dose of self-deprecating humor, and a re-read of Normal People with my office book club.
MOST LOVED PODCAST
S-Town was fantastic.
THE WORD
(BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY)
Long time listener, first time caller. Hayley here – a Senior Strategist at Giant Spoon New York, a full-service advertising agency.
When not strategizing, you may find me at the world’s first urban rooftop vineyard learning about growing grapes or in front of my stove attempting to channel the perfect blend of Alison Roman and Molly Baz – linen apron optional.
I’ve actually never met Rosie or Faris, but from everything the guest hosts before me have said they seem pretty great. I did, however, win a company superlative for discovering interesting things before most people do – thanks in part to this newsletter.
“Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle."

Do Algorithms Have Taste?
#TheFeed #Aesthetic #Originality
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about taste. What does it mean and where does it come from? Who decides what is good taste and what is bad? While I like to think of taste as an inherently human capacity, I also know that our Instagram likes and Amazon algorithms are always gently nudging us to the “right thing” for us. Our restaurants, stores, and yoga studios have become a living version of these feeds, complete with fiddle leaf figs and neon script. While algorithms are making it easier to find the things we like, they’re also making us question the differences between genuine taste and a machine-created version. ::VOX::
How Orange Wine Became an Irresistible Assault on Pleasure
#OrangeWine #InGoodTaste #Funky
Orange wine, also called skin contact wine, has gotten quite popular in the US over the last few years. Go to a wine bar on the LES and you’re guaranteed to see at least a few glasses around the bar. While I’ll order a glass in the spirit of trying something new, I’ll be the first to say the taste isn’t universally appealing. These wines can be acidic, bitter, and sometimes even barnyard-y. It’s interesting to think that their appeal may be a more cerebral one. Ordering a glass of orange wine is a symbol that you’re in-the-know, willing to suffer through something you don’t like just so you can talk about it. Which is more important: showing “good taste” or tasting good? ::THE NEW YORKER::
Coffee Table Cookbooks
#DiningIn #OrderingIn
Hard-copy cookbooks are thriving, surprisingly unaffected by the shift to mobile and the rise of online cooking sites. You can now find a cookbook for every specific taste, gadget, or cuisine out there. But instead of actually using them to cook, people are using them as coffee table books. They’re looking at the pictures, imagining the life they could be living if they made that perfect roast chicken, and then probably ordering delivery. ::NBC NEWS::
