Strands of Genius: Internet Language, Why Strategy Fails, The E-book Bubble
Guest curated by Daniele Lazzarotto
This year we’re aiming to highlight 50 creative thinkers that have inspired us, by giving them the opportunity to guest curate this newsletter, Strands of Genius. Dani reached out to Rosie and Faris about speaking at a Strategy Conference in Brazil, and several months later they were all hanging out in Porto Alegre. Dani was the hostess with the mostest, and they became fast friends!
:: A BIT MORE ABOUT GUEST CURATOR, DANIELE LAZZAROTTO ::
LOCATION: Porto Alegre, Brazil
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Tricô, a brand consultancy I founded
I'm a Brazilian brand strategist who is always looking for inspiration. I've founded my own brand consultancy and currently am spreading the strategy seeds as a teacher. I do my best to stay tuned with people I admire, mostly through books. Which is actually how I got to know Faris and Rosie! After falling in love with Faris' book, Paid Attention, I invited them both to be speakers at a Strategy Conference I co-organize in my hometown Porto Alegre. We became close friends and my admiration grew even bigger. I'm honored to host this edition of the Strand of Genius, and excited to share some content with you. I've handpicked 3 links (all female content) to bring some inspiration to your day. Hope you like it :)
Editor’s Note (Rosie): One of our favorite parts of working with marketers around the world is, well, getting to meet interesting marketers all over the world! Dani truly was the hostess with the mostest, picking us up from the airport, taking us out for a delicious Brazilian meal, and our conversations were nonstop. We are currently running a campaign to try to get Dani to come to TN one of these days so that we can return the hospitality. Until then, we’re following her thinking online.

WHERE DOES INTERNET LANGUAGE COME FROM?
“Humans interact with each other, and they’re social — and when they find something funny, they repeat it,” says Gretchen McCulloch, internet linguist and author of Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language. Here’s the definitive list of the phrases we couldn’t stop saying this decade on the internet — that our grandchildren will undoubtedly make fun of us for in the decades to come. (Vulture)
WHY IS OUR STRATEGY NOT EXECUTED?
Goals, strategy, tactics, and execution should be part of the same dynamic process—implementing long-term priorities through short-term, daily operations. But many strategy execution processes fail because companies rapidly adjust to their immediate environment, loosing track of the strategy and goals. Execution is Strategy (by Laura Stack) maps the key to efficient strategic execution: L.E.A.D — Leverage, Environment, Alignment, and Drive. Here’s her Execution Quotient (EQ) Assessment: a rigorous test we can apply to our companies (and clients!) to better understand if the company's culture is set up to implement strategy or to pose a barrier instead. (Laura Stack)
THE E-BOOK BUBBLE
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Kindle person. But, data sides with those who say they can't leave their hardcovers. Here’s a short video that explain why the hard cover experience is beating the digital revolution for the book industry. (YouTube)
:: AND NOW… SOME FAST FAVORITES ::
:: Game :: I’m not a game person! What can I say?!
:: City :: Montevideo, Uruguay - It’s charming, small, and has plenty of nice people
:: Book :: Hard to choose, but I’ll go with 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Harari
:: Podcast :: Not related to marketing, but I love Esther Perell’s podcast

Rosie, Faris, and I were all smiles at the Strategy Conference around this time last year!

It's called Genius Steals because we believe ideas are new combinations and that nothing can come from nothing. But copying is lazy. We believe the best way to innovate is to look at the best of that which came before and combine those elements into new solutions.
Co-Founders Faris & Rosie are award-winning strategists and creative directors, writers, consultants and public speakers who have been living on the road/runway since March 2013, working with companies all over the world. Our Director of Operations is nomadic like us, our accounting team is based out of Washington, our company is registered in Tennessee, and our collaborators are all over the world. Being nomadic allows us to go wherever clients need us to be, and to be inspired by the world in between.
