Strands of Genius: No More Eternal Septembers, Subtitles Are Fundamental, 30 Years of Silence of the Lambs
Guest curated by Husani Oakley
Each year we’re aiming to highlight 50 creative thinkers that have inspired us, by giving them the opportunity to guest curate this newsletter, Strands of Genius. This edition is guest curated by Husani Oakley, as part of our collaboration with 600 & Rising.
:: A BIT MORE ABOUT GUEST CURATOR, HUSANI OAKLEY ::
LOCATION: New York, NY
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Netflix
Hi, I’m Husani. I work at Netflix, where I’m the Director of Creative Practices, and I serve on a few non-profit boards, including 600 & Rising. Been at a few agencies (Deutsch NY, W+K), started a few startups (Flavorpill, GoldBean), and perhaps obviously, I drink more than a few cups of coffee a day.
Editor’s Note (Genius Steals Team): This edition of Strands is part of our ongoing partnership with 600 & Rising, an advocacy group for Black talent in advertising and PR. Thanks so much for being here, Husani, and for sharing the links below!

NO MORE ETERNAL SEPTEMBERS
Believe it or not, there was an era where the Internet was more than a just couple of social media apps. Back when logging on took a hell of a lot more effort, technically-minded folks hung out on USENET message boards all on their own. Until one fateful day in 1993, when everything changed. (Tedium)
BECAUSE READING (SUBTITLES) IS WHAT? FUNDAMENTAL!
As the mainstream, ever hungry for new content, shines a spotlight on more and more subcultures, how do we ensure the nuances of that subculture remain understood and appreciated by outsiders? Here’s a fascinating piece on the complications that arise when translating Ru Paul’s Drag Race, an American reality show focused on the drag community, to a global audience. (Asymptote)
DR. LECTER, MY NAME IS CLARICE STARLING
It has been thirty (!!) years since The Silence of the Lambs debuted in theaters. Lambs is one of those movies that you know backwards and forwards, but if it’s on while you’re mindlessly flipping through channels on a Saturday afternoon, you stop and watch it anyway. Or is that just me? Tananarive Due interviews the movie’s stars, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. (Vanity Fair)

It's called Genius Steals because we believe ideas are new combinations and that nothing can come from nothing. But copying is lazy. We believe the best way to innovate is to look at the best of that which came before and combine those elements into new solutions.
Co-Founders Faris & Rosie are award-winning strategists and creative directors, writers, consultants and public speakers who have been living on the road/runway since March 2013, working with companies all over the world. Our Director of Operations is nomadic like us, our accounting team is based out of Washington, our company is registered in Tennessee, and our collaborators are all over the world. Being nomadic allows us to go wherever clients need us to be, and to be inspired by the world in between.
Hit reply and let’s talk about how we might be able to work together :)
