THE WORD | THESE BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY...
yoga, one more week of vegetarian eating, getting our teeth cleaned, the mountains of Rishikesh, leftover Diwali fireworks, updating our talk descriptions & website for 2020, planning our annual holiday party in the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee, watching monkeys, and trying to convince all the rickshaw drivers that it's not a price negotiation: yes, we actually *like* to walk.
WHAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT | KNOW THYSELF
Unfortunately our yoga teacher had to go to Delhi for a few days, so we decided to take a class at another local studio. The yoga teacher seemed unhappy that we were there, and not very willing to accommodate several other newbies who also decided to drop in.
We found ourselves giggling because every teacher seems to have a different perspective on what is the "right way" to do something. And in fact, one thing he suggested was exactly what we were told not to do by another teacher, which we expressed. He said, "Yes but that is just one teacher" and followed with his certifications. To which we responded "Cool! And you are also just one teacher." It got the class laughing, and a small smile from the teacher, but he pressured us: "You need to watch the YouTube video to see the Father of Ashtanga, and he will show you the RIGHT way." To which we responded, "And *he* is also just one teacher. There are many other teachers all over the world, who all have differing perspectives." We told him that we would listen and do our best, but ultimately we would be going what felt good for our bodies. But it got us thinking.
Whenever possible, learn from as many teachers as possible. What works for someone else may not work for you. You will hear differing perspectives, sometimes even contradictory in their nature, and this is part of the learning too -- You have to decide what you will help you on your journey.
Making these decisions can be hard, because we often look to teachers and guides to tell us what to do, and how to do it. To push back against an authority figure doesn't always symbolize disrespect, but perhaps a newfound respect for your own perspective. And that's valuable, too. Ultimately, true teachers are more than simply instructors - they actively help you learn rather just tell you what to do.
"At the heart of the discussion of workplace burnout and schedule flexibility is technology. The same electronic tools that have made working from home easier than ever have also made it harder for employees to fully unplug from their jobs when they aren't in the office."
- Bill Chappell, NPR
Mark Pollard's Strategy Is Your Words
#FriendOfGS #ContinuingEducation #Kickstarter
Rosie had the privilege of getting to work with Mark Pollard at Saatchi & Saatchi, and neither of us are shy about singing Mark's praises. He's been working on what he's calling a "deskbook," a practical strategy resource that lives on your desk (not a business book that you read once and put away on a shelf), for the past year or so. And now, he's taking pre-orders on Kickstarter. We're proud to say we're the 3rd backer for this campaign, and can't wait to see the final product. ::KICKSTARTER::
Microsoft Japan Trials 4-Day Work Week; Sees Boost In Productivity
#WorkLifeBalance #Productivity #Flexibility
Microsoft's recent 4-day work week trial (at the same pay) in Japan not only boosted internal productivity to the tune of 40% (!!) but also lower operating costs, considering for example their 23% decrease in electricity costs. Workplace analyst Dan Schawbel says that even in the US, where healthcare costs are extremely high, when given an option, they choose flexibility over health care coverage. ::NPR::
