:: A BIT MORE ABOUT GUEST CURATOR, GAIA GIOVE ::
LOCATION: London, UK
Hey there, I'm Gaia! Recently, I wrapped up a six-month placement at London agency House 337 (Engine/WCRS), delving into the world of creative advertising, an experience that solidified my passion for a career in this area. Simultaneously, I was concluding an MA in Advertising at the University of the Arts London, where Paul, our course leader, opened doors to connect with Faris at Genius Steals.
Right now, I'm on the lookout for opportunities in creative advertising, perfecting my portfolio, and managing a few social media profiles on the side. When I'm not doing that, I'm either watering my plants or at my local climbing/bouldering gym - something I’ve recently picked up and been loving!
Editor’s Note (Genius Steals): We always enjoy hosting students and recent graduates, especially those from Paul Caplan’s program at the London College of Communication! Thank you for bringing your incredible energy to this edition, Shreya!

THIRD PLACES, STANLEY CUP MANIA, AND THE EPIDEMIC OF LONELINESS
This video essay addresses a significant issue prevalent in today's Western society: the absence of a 'third space', which has led to a myriad of problems. The constant connectivity offered by social media often creates a false sense of interaction, despite minimal real-life engagement. Additionally, the commercialisation of services like Uber can evoke feelings of inadequacy when seeking help from friends for simple favours, such as rides to the airport. However, friendships inherently entail a level of reciprocity and availability, which plays a vital role in supporting one another.
The examples and data presented in the video are eye-opening, prompting reflection regarding the last time we engaged with neighbours or acquaintances in our “community”. These ideas hit close to home for me, particularly as I’ve been contemplating the significance of fostering a close-knit community, a connection I felt was lacking while living in a big and busy city like London.
Overall, the video delves into various aspects that contribute to feelings of loneliness in modern society. It serves as a reminder for us all to be more aware of these issues and to actively cultivate meaningful friendships and community bonds. (YouTube - Mina Le)
CONCERNING TOPICS
This article delves into a topic that I find both fascinating and concerning: the rise political divide between men and women, particularly in Gen-Z. It serves as an informative starting point for understanding this issue, but I believe there's a need for more extensive research to explore its various dimensions and how it reflects broader societal trends. How did we reach this point, and what implications does it have on our future?
While the article primarily focuses on the situation in the US, I'm convinced that this problem is widespread and not confined to any one country. The rise of the 'alpha male' archetype, often glorified online, is one example of how this trend has been manifesting itself. Ultimately, I worry that this growing polarisation will only deepen divisions and hinder progress for both genders, so we should all be aware of it. (Time)

Quick self promo for one of the main things I've worked on, my Final Major Project. I’ll try to briefly summarise it and spark your interest.
Many brands trying to reach Gen-Z about eco-friendly practices use fear tactics, but they often miss the mark. With so many young people feeling eco-anxiety, scaring them into action can backfire. I decided to talk to people with eco-anxiety and others who love worldbuilding, which is the communication strategy I believed could be a solution. What I found is that we need a balanced approach to addressing climate change—one that's urgent but not overwhelming. It's all about finding that balance between hope and fear. You can find it here. If you want to get in touch you can find me on LinkedIn.
Hope you've enjoyed this piece and to hear from some of you!
Cheers,
Gaia :)

It's called Genius Steals because we believe ideas are new combinations and that nothing can come from nothing. But copying is lazy. We believe the best way to innovate is to look at the best of that which came before and combine those elements into new solutions.
