THE WORD | THESE BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY
A few final peaceful days in Beersheba Springs, TN, before we head to India by way of London. We're updating materials for 2020, and first up, we've got a new introductory video for our speaking gigs! A huge thanks to Tortuga who gave us a Tortuga bag to cut up for the making of this video. We're big fans of their bags and couldn't bring ourselves to cut up one of ours... Check it out as the first link below :)
WHAT WE'RE THINKING ABOUT | COMPLEX FUN
OK so Spirit Island may be too much for us, but it's a much loved game among serious tabletop board gamers, for whom the added levels of complexity are clearly part of the appeal. [The game is a mash up of Catan and Pandemic keeping in the elements of both and adding more layers.]
We are usually drawn to easy things. Fluency is favorability in various arenas, especially communication, but if something is too easy we get bored with it more quickly. There is some element of work that makes us enjoy things more, even fun. Cooking and working together to understand game rules, being uncomfortable or being comfortable with not knowing what you are doing, brings out certain a camaraderie but it requires investment. You are putting something in in get closer to people.
This dynamic is not at play with interacting with corporate entities, which is why participation tends to follow obvious lines of interest [budding film makers enter cpg ad contests more often] or incentives. But making something serious for people to enjoy can be an idea in itself. Check out Wendy's just released tabletop RPG.
"What I learned how to do in New York—and this is an extremely important skill to have in any big city—is how to say “no.” How to build boundaries and walls. How to know when enough is enough. How to reject or prevent distractions so that I could do my work most efficiently. I will take that power with me for the rest of my life, but I will use it sparingly from now on. Because you can’t say no to your neighbors here. You have to pay attention to the people around you." - Jami Attenberg

#SpeakingSwagger #WatchThis #Obsessed
As you likely know from being a subscriber to this here newsletter, about half of our income comes from speaking at conferences and events around the world. It's honestly our favorite thing to do, and we're hoping that 2020 has even more speaking in store for us. Previously, we had an introductory video featuring Faris, but as now nearly all our talks are dual presentations, we needed one with Rosie. We collaborated with our friends from The Goondocks.tv to make this introductory video, which we'll start rolling out before our talk. No goldfish, or Ashleys, were harmed in the making of this video ;) (And if you might want to hire us for a talk, do be in touch...) ::THE GOONDOCKS.TV::
Guy Fieri: Instagram's Best Meme Account?
#LOL #FlavorTown #CultureHacking
Guy Fieri is known for his hair, his restaurants, his ridiculousness -- but also his ability to poke fun at himself, which is why it's less surprising that folks on Instagra are picking' up what he's puttin' down. ::ESQUIRE::
Bright Lights, Small City
#SelfCare #DifferentStrokes #Exploration
In her 40s, Jami Attenberg moved from New York City to New Orleans. From a city that celebrates anonymynity to a place where she sometimes finds herself with small-townitis. And yet perhaps the lack of anonymynity leads to accountability. A celebration of both cultures, for different reasons, and a beautiful read. ::CURBED::

PS: Summer Reading
Every once in a while Faris publishes a few book recommendations and people always seem to like them. He put together a short slate of books for your brainboxes, mixed fiction and non-fiction as always. ::MEDIUM:: Meanwhile, Rosie catalogued all of Cindy Gallop's book suggestions via social media, along with her posts referring to them. As these are referral links, if you buy books from this shop directly, we'll use any money we make to buy drinks for young people in advertising. ::AMAZON::
